At SOS, volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. They are caring, gifted people who selflessly offer their time and energy, and bring a diverse range of talent to our organization.
There’s something for everyone who wants to help at SOS. Being an SOS volunteer is easy, fun, rewarding and requires as little as a few hours a month.
Current Volunteer Needs (updated 7/8/2016)
As the front desk representative, you will interact one on one with houseguests, community members, donors and staff. Duties include answering and directing phone calls, entering donations and inventory information; and promoting a pleasant experience for guests, visitors and staff. Basic computer skills are necessary.
Current Available Shifts: Monday – 12 p.m.-4 p.m, 5-8 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Friday 12-4 p.m., 5-8 p.m.
Training is Wednesday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or Tuesday/Wednesday from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
We are in need of a volunteer to help organize our dry goods, pantry and refrigerated areas. Duties include putting away donations, checking expiration dates and rotating and discarding expired goods.
Apx. Time Commitment: The frequency of these duties vary. Approximately 2-3 hours weekly or bi-weekly.
Do you have a valid NYS driver’s license? Pick up donations from local food pantries, grocery stores, run house related errands and more.
Apx. Time Commitment: On-Call
Help out with general chores and maintenance, painting, organizing storage areas, putting away donations and other various tasks as needed.
Apx. Time Commitment: On-Call
Prepare bagged lunches in our kitchen or yours for distribution through our outreach and drop-in center programs. 10-15 bagged lunches are needed each weekday.
Apx. Time Commitment: Daily (Monday-Friday) 9 -11 a.m.
Assist the outreach coordinator with preparing and distributing needed supplies to individuals and families lodged in outlying motels.
Apx. Time Commitment: Tuesday 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday 12 p.m.-2 p.m.
Development and Marketing
Assist the development team preparing auction items, organizing event supplies, manning auction tables, greeting guests and other errands for our One Fine Day fundraiser on August 23, 2016 at Saratoga National Golf Club.
Apx. Time Commitment: August 15-22, as needed between 9-5 p.m., and/or Tuesday, August 23 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the event.
Brighter Days Gala Planning Committee
Help us start planning our Spring 2017 Brighter Days Gala to be held March 23, 2017 at Longfellows. Duties vary by interest, but include business networking, soliciting auction items and decor planning.
Apx. Time Commitment: Monthly committee meetings via conference or in-person, 2-5 hours/month outside of the office.
Have a knack for internet research? Explore new funding opportunities for us to offset program and supply costs.
Apx. Time Commitment: 3-4 hours monthly, as needed/available
New! Help us spread the word about SOS programs and services. Distribute marketing materials, attend meetings and help us brainstorm avenues for outreach in the community.
