During a recent visit to our Code Blue shelter, I had the privilege of meeting three extraordinary individuals: John, Susan, and Karen, who were recently housed from our Code Blue shelter. Their stories shed light on the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness, and the resilience they demonstrate in overcoming adversity.

John and Susan, an engaged couple, found themselves without a home after caring for Susan’s mother, who was admitted to a rehab facility. They navigated through temporary accommodations, like hotels, eventually resorting to sleeping on the streets, then Code Blue.

Similarly, Karen, a former nurse, became homeless after her aunt’s death. As her caregiver, Karen sacrificed so much and was left with little when her aunt’s home was sold. “I had nowhere to go,” she recounted. “I slept in my car in front of the DSS building because I didn’t know where else to go.”

Their paths intersected at our Code Blue shelter, where they found temporary refuge and support. Our staff helped John, Susan, and Karen navigate a difficult path to housing. Affordability and availability for those with limited income tends to lengthen instances of homelessness and cause vulnerability. Reflecting on their journey, Karen humorously described the housing search process as “terrible,” emphasizing the scarcity of available options. Despite the challenges, the unwavering commitment of our staff encouraged their path forward into housing.

“The day I got the letter for my apartment was so great.” Karen expressed, echoing the sentiment of newfound hope and stability. John emotionally professed, “They [Code Blue staff] put me in a position where now that I have an apartment and I’m stable, I can go back to work.”

John, Susan, and Karen shared insights into their daily lives at the shelter, highlighting the warmth and generosity of the community. Moreover, they spoke of the invaluable assistance provided by local organizations, such as the YMCA, which offers free memberships to shelter residents, and donations from restaurants and businesses that contribute to meals, basic needs, and resources.

Code Blue is a life-saving measure, preventing others from freezing to death on the streets, like Nancy Pitts.”  John told me, “It also helps people find themselves, talents, and a path forward. “

Susan spoke passionately about the stigma associated with homelessness. “We are often thought of as dirty, but we are human beings with extraordinary challenges, not unlike anyone else, but especially challenging to tackle without a stable place to live.”

As we celebrate their successful transition into housing, let us continue to advocate for systemic change and work towards a future where homelessness is no longer a reality for anyone.
