Michele’s story begins in Philadelphia, where her childhood was marked by neglect and hardship. Raised by a drug-addicted mother and an alcoholic stepfather, Michele grew up in an environment dominated by drugs, alcohol, and violence. Her sister and she were often left to fend for themselves, with little guidance or support. As a child, Michele was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, but her parents never sought the help she so desperately needed to succeed in school. Michele’s learning challenges led her to drop out in ninth grade. However, she later earned her GED, showing resilience and determination even in the face of adversity.
At 20, Michele met her ex-husband and became pregnant with her first son. The couple married when she was 21 and later had a second son. While Michele cherished her role as a mother, her marriage was troubled by her husband’s infidelity. After eight years, the marriage ended in divorce, leaving Michele to raise her children alone.
Michele’s struggles took a darker turn when she became a victim of the opioid crisis at age 28. Prescribed oxycodone for pain following multiple surgeries for degenerative disc disease, Michele soon found herself misusing the medication and eventually turning to other drugs. Over the years, Michele’s addiction caused a rift with her family, who distanced themselves from her.
In the midst of her addiction, Michele also faced numerous mental health challenges. Despite these challenges, Michele sought help and entered recovery for the first time seven years ago, managing to stay clean for 19 months before relapsing.
A year and a half ago, Michele made a life-changing decision to seek help once more. She entered rehab on her own and has remained clean since then. After a failed engagement left her without a place to live, she found herself homeless. Initially staying at a shelter that she described as unsafe and traumatic, Michele was eventually referred to Shelters of Saratoga (SOS). Although she initially experienced severe anxiety at the thought of being placed in another shelter, SOS turned out to be a lifeline. In our program, she found safety, privacy, and the support she needed to focus on her recovery and well-being.
While staying with us, Michele received the encouragement and resources she needed to start attending her therapy sessions and addiction groups regularly. With the help of our dedicated staff members, she began taking care of her health and working towards a stable future. The support Michele gained during her time with us allowed her to regain control of her life and ultimately secure an apartment, where she now feels safe and at home. Her dedication to recovery has allowed her to rebuild her relationships with her family, especially her sister, her children, and her new grandson. For Michele, there is nothing more important than the bond she has with her loved ones, and she is determined to keep it intact. Michele considers herself blessed and is deeply grateful for the opportunity to start anew.
Reflecting on her journey, Michele emphasizes the importance of patience and taking things one step at a time. Her story is a powerful reminder that despite the darkest moments, there is always hope for a brighter future. Michele now looks forward to spending time with her grandson, finding joy in the small moments that make life worth living. For those facing similar struggles, Michele offers words of encouragement: things CAN get better, but it takes time and persistence.
Michele’s journey is one of resilience, courage, and transformation. Her story illustrates the impact of compassion and support on the path to recovery and serves as an inspiration to others who are navigating their own challenges. Through her strength and determination, Michele has not only survived but thrived, and she is a beacon of hope for those who may feel lost in their own struggles.
